Malam Puisi Riong celebrates spirit of 'Negaraku'

KUALA LUMPUR: 'Malam Puisi Riong: Karya Negaraku' once again took place at Balai Berita Bangsar this evening, with over 100 guests in attendance.


The event, the second this year, was organised by Berita Harian (BH) to promote the 'Negaraku' (My Country) initiative launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on April 19 in conjunction with with this year's 60th National Day celebration.


BH literature editor Nazmi Yaacob said the event aims to instill a sense of patriotism among the people through poetry, by conveying meaningful messages on unity and the meaning of independence.


"We have been organising the event for the past three decades now. This year however is more special as we are also celebrating the country's 60th National Day, as well as Berita Harian's 60th anniversary.


"The event also aims to promote the the 'Negaraku' initiative by the government," he said.


The event, which lasted about three hours, started with a short theatre performance by students from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), depicted the country's struggle in gaining independence.


Several others who took part in the event by either reciting poems or singing included BH Deputy Group Editor Datuk Badrulhisham Othman, BH Executive Editor (news, feature, and digital) Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman, national laureate Datuk Dr. Anwar Ridhwan, NTV7 newscaster Ras Adibah Radzi as well as students of UiTM and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).


Also present was New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Bhd Chief Executive Officer Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdul Hamid.
