If you’re ever in Sarawak, there’s a breakfast spot in Kuching city with a name that pays homage to UK-based Malaysian comedian and YouTuber Uncle Roger.
A caricature of Uncle Roger, whose real name is Nigel Ng, is the logo of the Haiyaa Breakfast eatery that opened recently, not long after Ng became famous for roasting a BBC presenter’s fried rice recipe in the viral video Uncle Roger DISGUSTED by this Egg Fried Rice.
“Haiyaa” is the common expression of Ng whenever he seems frustrated over other people’s cooking. The stall inspired by him is located at the Siang-Siang Corner food court in Sarawak’s Tabuan Jaya district and serves English fare like breakfast muffins, pancakes, and toasts from 5.30am to 2pm every day except Wednesdays. Think McDonald’s breakfast but with cheesier, supersized meals that also include pork patties and bacon options.
As for pancakes, the stall serves it in stacks of three, drizzled in butter or honey, and with a choice of chocolate chips. Traditional breakfast lovers can also try the stall’s roti kahwin, which consists of toasts with either butter and kaya or peanut butter spreads. Toasts also come with a side of soft-boiled eggs.
It is not clear why the stall was inspired by Ng. Perhaps it’s the cross between popular local breakfast foods and the English-inspired options that reminded them so much of the Malaysia-UK YouTuber.
Anyhow, Haiyaa Breakfast seems like a great option for those who slept through McDonald’s breakfast, which ends at 10am.
