Malaysian getai singer charged for shouting gang slogans during Yishun show

SINGAPORE — A Getai singer who shouted gang-related slogans during a performance last year was charged on Tuesday (16 April).

Malaysian Goh Wee Chong, 39, said that he intended to plead guilty to his charge of using threatening words that were likely to cause harm, which falls under the Protection from Harassment Act. His case will next be mentioned on 30 April.

According to Goh’s charge sheet, at about 10.30pm on 7 September last year, Goh shouted the phrase “Ang Soon Tong Eh Tio” (Hokkien for “Ang Soon Tong’s territory”) while performing at a Lunar seventh month festival held at Block 101 Yishun Avenue 5.

Police earlier said they were alerted to the incident after receiving reports on a video of the performance that was circulated online.

If convicted, Goh could be fined up to $5,000.
