GEORGE TOWN: It was a joyous morning at the Penang Hospital here today as it welcomed six Merdeka babies.
The three boys and three girls were born between midnight and 10am.
Supervising nurse Sek Shoa Chio said all the infants are healthy and that the hospital is thrilled to welcome so many babies on such a historic day.

One of the proud mothers, Nurul Shahmira Shamsudin, 26, said she is grateful to have been able to give birth to her first child on Merdeka.
“I was so very happy to welcome my baby boy at 8.30am today. He is healthy and weighs 3.06kg.
“I have actually been in hospital for four days now. I was scheduled to give birth yesterday,” she said, adding that she and her husband, Kamarul Bahrin Mohd Nasir, 28, have been married for one year.
Meanwhile, the KPJ Specialist Centre here welcomed two Merdeka babies.
IN MELAKA, 20 babies were delivered at the Melaka Hospital this morning.
The 11 boys and nine girls were born between 12.01am and noon today.
One lucky mother, Nursyaza Syahirah Mohd Nassir, 23, said that the birth of her second child on such an important day is very meaningful for her.
She added that her son is lucky, as he will be able to celebrate his birthday with his father, Mohd Amin Abd Malik, 25, who was born at 11.59pm on Aug 30.
Nursyaza was one of several mothers of Merdeka babies who were visited by Chief Minister Adly Zahari today.
In addition, each baby was gifted with a hamper and special kit from non-governmental organisation, LOVE.

Another mother, Rohaya Mahadi, 39, said both her children were born on special days.
“My first child was born on Chinese New year, while my second was born on this historic day. It will be easy for me to remember their birthdays!
“My friends have recommended that I name my new baby ‘Nur Merdeka’. I told them I will discuss it with my husband first,” she said, adding that she gave birth at 1.58am.
