The announcement was made on Friday (7 April) via Astro Gempak’s Facebook page. Astro Gempak is an entertainment news portal owned by Malaysian broadcasting television network Astro, which airs the popular comedy show.

The announcement, which was made in Malay, said, “In a mark of respect to everyone and to ensure the continuous support of the fans of Maharaja Lawak Mega , the production crew of the programme has decided to replace Najip Ali with Datuk Aznil Hj Nawawi as the resident jury.”

On 5 April, Mediacorp posted an apology for airing an “offensive” comedy segment about PM Najib through Channel 5 show “OK Chope!”.

Najip himself also issued an apology, saying, “Over the last few days I have reflected on the comments I made during a segment on a Channel 5 comedy show which referenced Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. I realise how insensitive and callous I was. I would like to apologise unreservedly to Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. I beg his forgiveness and that of my viewers and friends.”
