Malaysians urged to sign petition to reopen probe against Najib

One million Malaysians have been invited to sign a petition requesting the Agong and Conference of Rulers to assist in reopening investigations into the funds transferred to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's private accounts. They have also been invited to "like" a Facebook page called "1Juta Desak Buka Kembali Siasatan Terhadap Najib Razak" (1 million urge investigations against Najib Razak be reopened). PKR seretary-general Rafizi Ramli said he had taken the initiative to launch this online campaign following the New York Times' report quoting Saudi Foreign Affairs Minister Adel al-Jubeir as saying that the fund was not a donation, but an investment from a Saudi citizen. Rafizi said the statement contradicted Attorney-General (A-G) Tan Sri Mohamad Apandi Ali's declaration that the funds were a donation, and raised new questions. "Najib is neither a businessman nor an expert investor. He does not own any business. A Saudi citizen would not give RM2.6 billion to him to invest because investing is not his expertise," said Rafizi. He said if the funds were truly for investment, it would involve firms and assets, creating a conflict of interest since Najib was prime minister. He said the funds may also be related to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), since Najib chaired its board of advisors and it had a history of dealing with "a certain individual from Saudi Arabia". "Hence, I urge the A-G to immediately reopen investigation papers and charges against Najib, in light of these new developments. "I would also like to remind the A-G to use his powers under the Mutual Legal Assistance treaty with other countries investigating 1MDB and/or Najib, including Switzerland, Singapore and the US." The petition states: "I (with the personal details and name herewith) voluntarily sign this petition by Malaysians to be submitted for the consideration of the DYMM Yang DiPertuan Agong and Raja-Raja Melayu for His Majesty's assistance to re-open the investigation and subsequent prosecution against Datuk Seri Najib Razak in relation to the vast amount of cash transferred to his personal account. "I appeal for His Majesty's wisdom so that an independent prosecutor can be appointed for the task taking into account the gravity of the allegation and its impact on the nation's image. "I resort to signing this petition solely for the love of this country and my undivided loyalty to His Majesty whom we look upon in times like this towards a fair and sovereign nation." – February 7, 2016.
