New mall alert: Johor Bahru’s Toppen Shopping Centre to open on Nov 13

The next megamall set to attract Singaporeans to Johor Bahru will open its doors on Nov 13, just in time for the year-end school holidays.

Toppen Shopping Centre made the announcement on its Facebook page today, after having initially released news about the development over a year ago.

The sprawling mall will span 1.1 million square feet in size — nearly the same as Orchard Road’s Ngee Ann City — and will take up four stories.

It is connected to the Johor Bahru IKEA mall at Taman Desa Tebrau, which takes around half an hour to drive from Singapore’s Woodlands Checkpoint — assuming there are no traffic jams, at least.

Toppen claims to be the first-ever mall in Malaysia to have an open rooftop for public use, where families can dine alfresco and kids can entertain themselves at the on-site playground or water play area. The property’s recreational facilities will even include a built-in skate park.

And, as you can see from these aerial renderings, The AEON Tebrau City mall is just a stone’s throw away in case shoppers grow tired of Toppen.

Online gamers will also be happy to know that Toppen is housing the second outlet of Malaysia’s e-sports center known as The Pantheon, which hosts e-sports tournaments and viewing parties, as well as acting as a venue for gamers to meet up and battle it out side-by-side, through games like Dota 2. Its first outlet is in Subang Jaya of Selangor state.

Nearly 85 percent of the retail space in Toppen Shopping Centre has already been leased out, according to this press release, with shops including gourmet supermarket Ben’s Independent Grocer, a physical outlet of online shopping site 9to9, and streetwear brand Concept Haus.

Not forgetting one of the most basic requirements of a JB mall – cinema and fast food. There will be over 30 eateries to dine at, with outlets such as your usual Johor Bahru fast-food staples like The Chicken Rice Shop and Marrybrown.

We’re not sure what the size of the cinema is just yet, but judging from the looks of the mall, we’re assuming it’s going to be pretty big.
