A man who pushed a woman onto a grass patch and molested her along Lower Delta Road admitted to the offence on Monday (7 January).

Cho Jian Jun, 27, was heading to a nearby coffeeshop in the Tiong Bahru area when he spotted the 20-year-old woman.

Cho, who co-owns a hawker stall in East Coast Lagoon, admitted to one count of using criminal force to outrage the university student’s modesty on 21 May last year.

His lawyer, Genesis Shen, said that Cho had drinks with friends hours before the incident and was in a state of intoxication when he committed the offence.

Around 4am, Cho was walking along Lower Delta Road to a nearby coffeeshop when he spotted the victim in front of him. Cho decided to follow the woman, who was heading home.

After realising that someone was behind her, the woman quickened her pace and Cho followed suit. The woman decided to move aside and let Cho pass.

As she did so, Cho hugged her upper body from behind and pushed the woman onto a grass patch beside the pavement. He then groped her for up to five seconds and fled when the woman screamed.

The woman called the police and Cho was arrested on 22 May.

Deputy Public Prosecutor James Chew urged the court to jail Cho for 10 months. He said Cho’s acts were “calculated” as he had followed the victim for a few minutes before assaulting her.

Shen said in mitigation that his client committed the offence on the “spur of the moment”. He asked for the sentencing to be adjourned for Cho to compensate the victim.

Cho will be sentenced on 12 February.
