Man arrested after fatal road accident near Tuas West Road

A 53-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly driving against the flow of traffic on the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) on Monday morning (19 December), killing a motorist and injuring four others.

The man was being investigated for causing death by a rash act, police said in a statement. Police were alerted at 8.02 am about the accident involving four cars, a motorcycle and a private bus.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was travelling along AYE towards Tuas Checkpoint where he was believed to have made a U-turn and travelled against the flow of traffic along AYE (Tuas). He then collided into several vehicles,” police said in a statement.

A 37-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, police added. Yahoo Singapore understands that the suspect was arrested on the spot.

A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesman said that the victim was trapped in the driver’s seat of his car and was extricated with the aid of hydraulic rescue tools.

The four persons who were injured in the accident were conveyed to the National University Hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

Traffic Police appeal to the public not to circulate the photos or videos of the deceased, in respect of the family.
