Update: This story has been updated with a statement from Singapore police.

A man claiming to be a Singapore policeman was arrested in Malaysia for having a fake pistol and handcuffs in his possession, reported Malaysian news agency Bernama on Wednesday (24 January).

The 47-year-old Malaysian was arrested at about 7.30pm on Tuesday at a cafe in Jalan Barcham, Perak, according to the report.

“We will contact the police (in Singapore) today (24 January) to find out whether the cafe operator is (a) member of the (Singapore Police Force). If not, he will be charged for having a fake pistol,” Perak Police chief Hasnan Hassan was quoted as saying in Bernama.

When contacted, officials at the Bercham police station declined comment.

In response to queries from Yahoo News Singapore, Singapore police said that the man arrested by Malaysian authorities is not a policeman from the Singapore Police Force.
