Man arrested for online comments inciting violence in relation to Benjamin Lim case

A 40-year-old Singaporean Chinese man has been arrested by the police for posting comments on Facebook inciting others to commit violence in relation to the Benjamin Lim case.

Posting in response to a news article about the death of Benjamin Lim, where five officers went to the boy’s school to speak to him regarding a case of outrage of modesty, the man wrote, “Please reveal the identity of the 5 plain clothes officers and we go handle them ourselves. Kill them.” A police report was made on 8 February 2016.

On 2 March 2016, the police arrested the 40-year-old suspect for the offence of Communicating an Electronic Record Containing Incitements to Violence, under Section 267C of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries a maximum jail term of five years, or fine, or both.

Investigations are ongoing.
