Man charged for allegedly impersonating HDB contractor to cheat victims

Investigations found that the man was neither authorised nor appointed by HDB for such works.

A man who impersonated a HDB contractor to cheat more than 19 people was charged in the State Courts on Wednesday (3 April).

Gary Lau, 55, currently faces five counts of cheating five individuals of $1,250 in total by pretending to be a Home Patching Contractor. The alleged offences took place between 25 October 2018 and 10 March this year.

The police had received reports that a man who identifying himself as an appointed contractor had allegedly cheated victims into handing over deposits between $100 and $500 for repair works he identified in their homes.

Investigations found that the man was neither authorised nor appointed by HDB for such works.

The man was arrested on Monday. Cheating carries a jail term of up to 10 years, and a fine.
