A man who allegedly assaulted Member of Parliament Dr Tan Wu Meng at a Meet-the-People Session this week was charged at the State Courts on Wednesday (18 April).

Mohammad Ameen s/o Mohamed Maideen, 32, faces one charge of criminal trespass and one charge of voluntarily causing hurt. The investigating officer in the case recommended to the court that Ameen be remanded for psychiatric evaluation for two weeks, which the court accepted.

Tan was meeting residents at block 334 Clementi Avenue 2, on Monday (16 April), when Ameen broke away from a queue shortly after 10pm and rushed to the interview area where Dr Tan was sitting.

Ameen assaulted the Jurong GRC MP before being restrained by volunteers and other residents, leaving Tan with bruises and neck abrasions. According to court documents, Ameen forcefully grabbed Tan by the neck, slammed him against a wall and punched him multiple times on his body.

It is unclear what motivated the attack, though the MP did indicate afterwards that he knew what the man’s issue was that he needed to see Tan about.

If found guilty of voluntarily causing hurt, Ameen can be jailed up to two years, or fined up to $5,000, or both.

Ameen was authorised to enter the interview area, but unlawfully remained on the premises. If convicted of criminal trespass, he can be jailed up to three months, or fined up to $1,500, or both.

Ameen will next appear in court on 10 May.
