The case of the car explosion reported in a Bukit Batok HDB multi-storey car park on the evening of 26 April was the result of an act of mischief, said the Singapore Police Force.

In a statement, the police said a 32-year-old man was charged in court on 29 April with the offence of mischief by fire. According to the police, the man will be held pending ongoing investigations.

The aftermath of the explosion was captured on video. In the clip posted on social media, a man was captured on video crying out in pain while passers-by attended to him. His clothes were torn and his body showed signs of burns. He was then taken to the Singapore General Hospital while still conscious. Portable canisters of butane gas were found at the scene.

Later media reports said that the blown-up Nissan could have been a rental car that had gone missing. A man named Alex Soo told the media that the car belonged to him and that he had earlier reported the disappearance to the police.

According to the media report, Soo claimed that the person who had hired the vehicle allegedly had not paid the rental fee and had failed to return the car.
