A man accused of attempting to bribe his way out of being arrested for drink driving was charged in court on Wednesday (3 April).

Singaporean Chong Wei Kwong, 48, had allegedly attempted to give $1,000 to a police officer on 14 December last year at 1 Selegie Road.

He was charged with one count of trying to bribe Staff Sergeant Low Wee Meng so that Low would not arrest him for drink driving. Low rejected the bribe.

“Drink-driving is a serious offence that poses serious threats to public safety. Any attempt to avoid arrest through bribery would only aggravate the wrongdoing,” said the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) on Wednesday.

Corruption carries a jail term of up to five years along with a possible fine of up to $100,000.

Chong will return to court on 24 April.
