Man City 7-0 RB Leipzig LIVE! Haaland five goals - Champions League result, match stream and latest reaction

Man City vs RB Leipzig LIVE!

Manchester City eased into the Champions League quarter-finals as Erling Haaland starred in a last-16 demolition at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night. The Norwegian superstar became only the third player ever to score five goals in a single game in Europe’s elite club competition as he also broke the all-time City record for most goals in a single season that had stood since 1929... before the end of March.

Haaland now has a scarcely believable 39 goals in just 36 appearances for the club since joining from Borussia Dortmund last summer, including five hat-tricks and counting. A number of other individual records tumbled on an incredible night, with City eventually matching their largest-ever win in European competition as captain Ilkay Gundogan finished off a sublime team move and the terrific Kevin De Bruyne also netted a late scorcher to go along with Haaland’s unforgettable heroics.

In this sort of mood, rampant City will be the team to avoid in Friday’s quarter-final draw, with renewed hope that Haaland can fire them to achieving long-awaited glory in the Champions League. Follow Man City vs RB Leipzig reaction live below!

Pep Guardiola reaction

22:44 , George Flood

“It was a really good performance from minute one until the end for everyone...very good, very good,” the City boss told BT Sport.

"We created our own problems, but apart from that, we played really, really, really, really good - with the ball, without the ball. We scored a lot of goals, Haaland was amazing, but everyone was exceptional."

Guardiola: Haaland is incredible

22:45 , George Flood

And here’s Pep on his star striker...

“He’s an incredible guy with huge talent, power and mentality. Really good,” the Spaniard said of Haaland.

“It’s incredible in only 60 minutes, no more than that. If he played maybe 90 minutes, he could do... I don’t know.”

Haaland wanted double hat-trick

22:28 , George Flood

Haaland jokingly bemoans being taken off by Guardiola while hunting his double hat-trick!

“I told him when I went off, ‘I would love to score a double hat-trick‘. But what can I do?”

Erling Haaland reaction

22:27 , George Flood

Here’s the man of the moment speaking to BT Sport...

"It's a big night, first of all to play (in the) Champions League. I'm really proud to play (in the) Champions League and I love this competition, as everybody knows.

"Five goals, to win 7-0 at home, I'm so happy.

“Should I be honest now? I’m a bit blurry in my head. I can’t remember the goals. I was just shooting, not thinking, to be honest.

"My super-strength? I think after scoring five goals I have to say scoring goals.

(Manchester City FC via Getty Ima)

"Should I be honest? A lot of goals today I didn't think, I was just doing it. On the penalty, I was just trying to get the ball into the back of the net, same with the second goal, same with the third goal, same with every goal.

"I didn't think on every single goal. I think a lot of it is just being quick in the mind and trying to do the right thing, trying to put it where the keeper is not.

"I think a little bit of it is quality, but a lot of it is in the head, I think."

No prizes for guessing tonight’s player of the game!

They should give him all the match balls, not just one...

Manchester City 7-0 RB Leipzig (8-1 agg)

Five for record-breaking Haaland and seven for City, who breeze into the Champions League quarter-finals by laying down the gauntlet to their rivals.

What a night at the Etihad. Could this be the year?

GOAL! Man City 7-0 RB Leipzig | Kevin De Bruyne 92’ (agg 8-1)

21:51 , George Flood

92 mins: Don’t forget about me, says De Bruyne.

He’s been exceptional tonight too and rifles in a sensational last-gasp seventh to equal City’s biggest-ever European win.

Great work from Mahrez in the build-up.

Utterly relentless from Guardiola’s men.

21:50 , George Flood

90 mins: Just two minutes of added time for Leipzig to endure.

21:48 , George Flood

How many goals tonight, Erling?

 (PA)
(PA)

21:45 , George Flood

84 mins: A break in play now as Akanji needs treatment after a whack to the head from Leipzig goalkeeper Blaswich.

Looks like the Swiss defender will be okay to continue.

21:44 , George Flood

81 mins: Mahrez - whose first-leg opener in Germany three weeks ago seems a very distant memory now - is enjoying himself here as he and Akanji threaten a seventh for City.

Dani Olmo and Lukas Klostermann have come on for Leipzig.

Off go Szoboszlai and Henrichs.

21:41 , George Flood

78 mins: A flicker of life from Leipzig as Ederson concedes possession and substitute Silva bends a shot wide of the post.

The Brazilian had that covered, in fairness.

21:37 , George Flood

76 mins: Phillips gives the ball away cheaply for City and Akanji is booked for a poorly-timed sliding challenge.

21:37 , George Flood

72 mins: City are just cruising to the finish now, content to knock the ball around at will without exerting themselves too much.

No further chances to speak of, with Leipzig just praying for that final whistle.

21:30 , George Flood

67 mins: City have stepped off a level since Haaland’s withdrawal.

But you can afford to step off the gas a bit at 6-0! Although no one told De Bruyne, who is still battling away and receives a rather harsh booking.

Guardiola’s men still totally monopolising possession. 66 per cent, to go with 20 shots, 14 on target.

What a performance.

21:29 , George Flood

Haaland joins Lionel Messi as only the second player to net five in a Champions League knockout tie...

21:27 , George Flood

63 mins: Andre Silva, Mohamed Simakan and Yussuf Poulsen have all been sent on by Leipzig.

Off go Forsberg, Haidara and Werner.

Best of luck, lads. Leipzig will do very well indeed to keep this at six.

21:24 , George Flood

62 mins: Haaland won’t get that double hat-trick as he’s withdrawn by Guardiola just past the hour mark, no doubt with Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Vincent Kompany’s Burnley in mind.

Julian Alvarez is on, along with Sergio Gomez and Kalvin Phillips.

Heading off with Haaland are Stones and Rodri.

21:22 , George Flood

21:22 , George Flood

58 mins: Should have told you in all that excitement that Foden and Mahrez replaced Grealish and Gundogan.

Another chance for City as Mahrez’s header is repelled by the feet of Blaswich.

GOAL! Manchester City 6-0 RB Leipzig | Erling Haaland 57’ (agg 7-1)

21:17 , George Flood

57 mins: Okay, this is getting silly now.

FIVE for Haaland, who has now broken that City single-season scoring record - which had belonged to Tommy Johnson since 1929 - with 39.

Blaswich denies Akanji but again Haaland reacts fastest to turn home another rebound.

City absolutely rampant.

GOAL! Manchester City 5-0 RB Leipzig | Erling Haaland 54’ (agg 6-1)

21:13 , George Flood

53 mins: Four for Haaland, who with 38 goals has just matched City’s all-time single-season scoring record!

A corner is headed back across goal to the Norwegian, who rises like a salmon to head on target.

Blaswich makes an initial save and then also denies Akanji, but Haaland is there to blast in his fourth.

21:12 , George Flood

52 mins: Leipzig have to get a grip here or this really will be a cricket score.

The irrepressible De Bruyne gets to the byline, where his drilled cross is diverted behind by Gvardiol.

Phil Foden will be on soon for City.

GOAL! Manchester City 4-0 RB Leipzig | Ilkay Gundogan 49' (agg 5-1)

21:09 , George Flood

49 mins: A frankly ridiculous team goal from City that starts from Ederson and is eventually arrowed into the bottom corner by Gundogan, via several players including De Bruyne, Haaland and Grealish.

Beautiful, beautiful football. Just superb.

From bad to worse for Leipzig.

Second half

21:07 , George Flood

Back underway at the Etihad, with no personnel changes from either manager just yet.

Will City further hammer home their advantage, or can Leipzig mount a remarkable comeback?

They roused for the second half at the Red Bull Arena three weeks ago, but this is a different challenge altogether.

21:01 , George Flood

Just ridiculous...

21:01 , George Flood

In case anyone has lost count, that’s now five hat-tricks this season for Haaland alone and 17 for his career aged just 22.

Up to 37 goals in total for the season in 36 matches.

An utterly absurd talent.

Half-time

20:51 , George Flood

Manchester City 3-0 RB Leipzig (agg 4-1)

Complete and utter dominance from City.

The quarter-finals surely now beckon, bar the most extraordinary second-half collapse.

Leipzig have been absolutely blown away.

GOAL! Man City 3-0 RB Leipzig | Erling Haaland 47’ (agg 4-1)

20:48 , George Flood

47 mins: There’s the first-half hat-trick... I think!

More brilliant play from De Bruyne earns a City corner on the stroke of half-time, which Dias heads onto the post.

The ball rolls across the line before Haidara tries to clear but fires straight into Haaland and in.

Had the ball already crossed the line from the Dias header? I don’t think so!

City are in absolute cruise control at the Etihad, leading 4-1 on aggregate now.

(Getty Images)

20:47 , George Flood

45 mins: Two minutes of added time signalled at the end of this thoroughly one-sided first half.

20:46 , George Flood

44 mins: City look like scoring every time they go forward - which is pretty much all the time.

Haaland is sprung behind the defence and sees his quick low cross blocked.

But the offside flag is up.

20:44 , George Flood

40 mins: City are really testing the mettle of this Leipzig defence once again, getting plenty of low balls into the box looking to tee up Haaland for his latest hat-trick.

20:41 , George Flood

37 mins: It should be 3-0 to City after De Bruyne releases Gundogan with a terrific pass, but again a busy Blaswich makes a firm save.

20:39 , George Flood

35 mins: A very odd couple of minutes for City as Szoboszlai looks to release Laimer with a superb long pass forward on the counter.

Ederson comes racing miles out of his box and wipes out the Austrian midfielder, but clearly he got something on the ball.

In fact, Werner ends up with the yellow for his bitter complaints.

City then almost let Leipzig back into the tie as they give the ball away while trying to pass out from the back and an initial touch from Laimer can’t be finished off by Werner.

That was a huge chance. Guardiola seething.

(Action Images via Reuters)

20:36 , George Flood

32 mins: City are still hammering away at this Leipzig defence.

Haaland is in again but it’s a strong save from Blaswich to beat away his latest shot at the front post.

City then earn another corner after De Bruyne’s searching free-kick is diverted behind by the goalkeeper.

20:33 , George Flood

29 mins: Haidara can’t test Ederson as shell-shocked Leipzig desperately search for a way back into this tie from a Raum free-kick.

Some genuine questions over the decision-making so far tonight, by the way.

That handball against Henrichs - who was booked - seemed very harsh, while there looked to be a bit of a shove on goalkeeper Blaswich from Haaland as City pressed high to win the ball back before the second goal.

20:32 , George Flood

26 mins: City are threatening a third goal that would really put this last-16 tie beyond doubt.

The snow is streaming down at the Etihad as Haaland hunts his FIFTH hat-trick of the campaign already.

Who would bet against him getting it with this much time left?

Watch: Haaland nets quick-fire City brace

20:31 , George Flood

Make that 36 and counting for the Norwegian goal machine this term.

Truly extraordinary!

GOAL! Man City 2-0 RB Leipzig | Erling Haaland 23’ (3-1 agg)

20:24 , George Flood

23 mins: Two goals in 78 seconds for Haaland and City!

WOW!

They quickly win the ball back with that suffocating high press and De Bruyne rattles the crossbar with a terrific strike.

Haaaland then reacts fastest, rising high to steer home the rebound.

City have started like a train here and look to be cruising through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Leipzig have an absolute mountain to climb now.

GOAL! Man City 1-0 RB Leipzig | Erling Haaland 22'

20:24 , George Flood

22 mins: A short run-up from Haaland, who buries his penalty into the bottom corner.

Blaswich went the right way, but no chance he was keeping that out.

Haaland’s 35th goal of the season. City up 2-1 on aggregate.

21 mins: Up steps Erling Haaland from the spot...

PENALTY TO MAN CITY

20:22 , George Flood

20 mins: Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic is advised by the VAR to go and check the pitchside monitor after a handball shout against Henrichs as he rose with Rodri there.

Did that even touch his hand?

The spot-kick is given!

20:21 , George Flood

18 mins: Another dangerous City centre from the right flank is picked off, but Leipzig invite more pressure with a woeful clearance.

There’s bedlam in the six-yard box from another corner, with pinball as Akanji tries to turn in Rodri’s header.

There’s another key block with Haaland lurking at the back post.

Heart in mouth stuff for Marco Rose.

20:18 , George Flood

16 mins: City ramp up the tempo once again as Ake’s delivery from the left is controlled wonderfully by De Bruyne inside the box, into the path of Grealish.

The England playmaker tries to bend a shot into the far corner but his curling effort is deflected over the crossbar by Leipzig captain Orban.

20:16 , George Flood

14 mins: Leipzig embark on a rare foray forward, but it’s good goalkeeping from Ederson to snuff out a cross from the byline.

20:14 , George Flood

11 mins: Another massive early opportunity for the hosts as Haaland is played in behind perfectly, but it’s brave goalkeeping from Janis Blaswich to come out and save with his legs.

City could easily be 2-0 up here already and we’ve played only 11 minutes...

 (Action Images via Reuters)
(Action Images via Reuters)

20:12 , George Flood

8 mins: City are more than up for this one!

The passing and movement is brilliant as a last-ditch intervention prevents another key chance in the opening 10 minutes at the Etihad.

20:10 , George Flood

5 mins: Leipzig are desperately trying to gain some confidence and possession after a rocky start but they are being penned in by the high press.

They were smashed for six on their last visit to this ground, remember!

20:06 , George Flood

3 mins: A very ominous start from City as they pile on the pressure from first whistle.

Gundogan volleys over after a superb cross from De Bruyne. What a chance!

Another corner arrives through Bernardo and Ruben Dias’ goal-bound header from another De Bruyne delivery is well blocked.

Leipzig are living dangerously very early on here.

Guardiola reveals where Haaland must improve

19:38 , George Flood

Erling Haaland spearheads City’s 4-3-3 as usual tonight and will be hopeful of adding further to his incredible 34-goal tally (five in the Champions League) so far this term after a winning penalty to down Crystal Palace.

Despite that amazing scoring form in his first season at the Etihad, however, Pep Guardiola believes he can still make improvements outside the penalty area.

“I don’t like one player just to score goals in the box. It’s important, we need it of him,” he said.

“But away from the opponents’ box where he cannot score a goal, we need him to be more active.

“We have to take a look at him and he has to be involved in what we’re doing. He has improved, he can be better.”

Fortress Etihad as Man City look to equal Arsenal record

19:27 , George Flood

Leipzig may well fancy their chances of an upset tonight, but City’s record in front of their own fans really is extraordinary.

They have won 17 of 19 home games already this season, and are unbeaten in their last 23 home matches in the Champions League - winning 21.

Per City’s official website, avoiding defeat tonight would see them equal Arsenal’s record for the longest home unbeaten run by an English club in Champions League history (24 games between September 2004 and April 2009).

Kampl replaces Silva in only Leipzig change

19:00 , George Flood

Leipzig show four changes from the first leg last month, with Benjamin Henrichs, David Raum, Amadou Haidara and Kevin Kampl all coming in.

Lukas Klostermann is a substitute again after battling illness, while Marcel Halstenberg and Andre Silva drop to the bench with Xaver Schlager out injured.

Kampl for Silva is Marco Rose’s only change from the team that cruised past Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

So Pep Guardiola shows just the one change from the side that beat Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

Phil Foden is the man that drops to the bench to accomodate Kevin De Bruyne’s return to the starting XI, with first-leg scorer Riyad Mahrez also staying among the substitutes.

That is also the case for Kyle Walker.

Walker and Mahrez are the two to drop out from the first leg, replaced by John Stones and De Bruyne.

Guardiola ‘admires’ Leipzig progress: ‘I am a big fan'

18:36 , George Flood

Leipzig currently sit third in the Bundesliga, five points behind second-place Borussia Dortmund - whom they face again in a cup quarter-final next month - and seven off leaders Bayern Munich.

They had been on an 18-match unbeaten streak until recently and have only lost twice across all competitions since September, with new boss Marco Rose adding key consistency after Domenico Tedesco's rather inconsistent tenure.

Guardiola is certainly a fan of the way they play.

“They are so aggressive in the high pressing and have an incredible build-up from the keeper - eight players inside, two incredible wide full-backs,” he said.

“You close inside and they go to the full-backs. When you defend outside they have more players inside. It’s so difficult to control, you have to find the right tempo for pressing.

“I admire a lot what Leipzig have done. When I was in Munich they were in the second division so I could not face them. I am a big fan of what they do.”

Guardiola: My City tenure will be judged on Champions League

18:15 , George Flood

Manchester City’s unprecedented success under Pep Guardiola has seen them win four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cups in seven years.

However, the Champions League remains the one major competition that continues to elude them after a runners-up berth to Chelsea in Porto in 2021 and painful semi-final exits in both 2016 and 2022.

Guardiola won the tournament twice in charge at Barcelona and was criticised for not lifting it again during his three years at Bayern Munich, regardless of his hat-trick of Bundesliga titles.

And the Spaniard begrudgingly accepts that it is in the Champions League that he will again ultimately be judged at City despite achieving scores of other major silverware.

“Yes. That doesn’t mean I agree with that but, absolutely, we’ll be judged for that competition,” he told reporters yesterday.

“My first Champions League game here (in 2016), they asked, ‘Are you here to win the Champions League?’

“If I was manager for Real Madrid I could understand, but I accept it. As much as we go through, it’s not going to change that.”

Guardiola: City must make adjustments after first leg

18:00 , George Flood

Pep Guardiola was coy on the changes that Manchester City need to make tonight after something of a game of two halves in Germany last month.

City were dominant in the first half at Red Bull Arena and Riyad Mahrez deservedly fired them ahead after a defensive mistake had been exploited by Ilkay Gundogan, but they could not find another way through despite feeling they should have had a penalty for a potential last-gasp handball by Benjamin Henrichs.

Leipzig were far better after the interval and deserved their headed equaliser through the in-demand Josko Gvardiol.

“I don’t pay any attention to what happened there,” Guardiola said of the first leg in his pre-match press conference on Monday.

“In the first half we were better, in the second half they were better. We’ve tried to figure out what to do, adjust a few things for more control and play a bit better.

“It’s a knockout game, maybe we need more. The game will dictate what we do.”

RB Leipzig team news

17:45 , George Flood

Leipzig have been hit far harder by injury woes of late, with top scorer Christopher Nkunku their most high-profile absentee.

The French forward, who will join Chelsea in a £53million transfer this summer, suffered a thigh strain in the costly 2-1 defeat by Bundesliga title rivals Borussia Dortmund earlier this month.

Austrian midfielder Xaver Schlager was also hurt in that game and could miss the rest of the season with a serious ankle issue.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi and Senegal defender Abdou Diallo are among the other Leipzig casualties tonight, though Konrad Laimer, Andre Silva, Dominik Szoboszlai and Timo Werner - who scored - all shook off illness to feature in the 3-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend.

Germany full-back Lukas Klostermann had also been feeling unwell and was an unused substitute in that game.

Man City team news

17:37 , George Flood

City’s hopes of trophy success across three fronts this term are aided by having no known injury concerns at present.

Kevin De Bruyne should start tonight having been limited to a late cameo off the bench as Erling Haaland’s penalty secured a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

John Stones also made his return from a hamstring injury in south-east London, while Phil Foden shook off a foot issue before struggling.

It will be intriguing to see if Guardiola opts for both Foden and Grealish alongside Haaland in attack tonight, or if Riyad Mahrez is handed a recall alongside De Bruyne having scored in the first leg and been rested against Palace.

Kyle Walker is another player left on the bench at Selhurst that should return here.

Predicted Man City XI: Ederson; Walker, Akanji, Dias, Ake; De Bruyne, Rodri, Silva; Foden, Haaland, Grealish.

Welcome to Man City vs RB Leipzig LIVE coverage!

17:20 , George Flood

Good evening and a very warm welcome to the Evening Standard’s latest LIVE coverage of the 2022-23 Champions League.

Porto and Inter Milan clash in Portugal tonight, but here our focus is on events at the Etihad Stadium where Manchester City and RB Leipzig collide in an intriguing last-16 decider.

This tie is finely poised after an entertaining 1-1 first-leg draw in Germany three weeks ago that saw rumoured City transfer target Josko Gvardiol head in late on to cancel out Riyad Mahrez’s opener.

City are heavily favoured to win here on home soil and reach the quarter-finals, though the pressure associated with trying to finally end their long wait for glory in Europe’s elite club competition seems to grow stronger every year and Leipzig have only lost twice in all competitions since September.

Kick-off tonight is at 8pm GMT, so stay tuned for match build-up, thoughts from both managers, latest team news, lineups and minute-by-minute game updates.
