A man in his 50s remains in critical condition after a house fire in Toronto's west end Thursday night, emergency services say.

The blaze broke out in a home on Oakwood Avenue south of St. Clair Avenue West, according to Toronto Fire.

Firefighters were called to the home at about 9:35 p.m. The fire was declared under control by 10:45 p.m.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke. Firefighters rescued one person from the property, Toronto Fire said.

A woman also sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries in the blaze, and several other people were displaced. It's not clear when those people may be able to return to their residences.

Ten people were living at the home at the time of the fire, according to Tyrone Steer, manager of the home. Steer said the home operates as an independent living facility for people who have had mental health and addiction issues.

Margaret Smith, a neighbour, said she is concerned about the people displaced by the fire.

"We've lived here for over 30 years and the group home has been there longer and we've never had any difficulty with them... It's always been well managed so my heart goes out to them because that's terrible," Smith said.

Firefighters were still at the scene Friday morning to investigate how the fire may have started.
