Man dies after being thrown out of truck in collision with stationary car in Hong Kong

A delivery man in the passenger seat of a truck was killed on Sunday morning after he was thrown from the vehicle, which had rammed into a stationary car in the middle of a road in Tai Po.

Police said the car was not moving on Tolo Highway because it had run into a kerb near Science Park at about 2.50am. The knock forced the vehicle back into the middle of the road, where it sat for about 20 minutes before the truck hit.

The driver of the car, 40, was waiting for help when the incident happened. He suffered minor injuries.

The force of the impact from the collision threw the 60-year-old delivery worker out of the truck, which ran over him as it skidded against the side of the road for another 200 metres before coming to a halt.

He was later confirmed dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was sent with the car driver to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital in Tai Po.

The car driver was also arrested for drink-driving after failing a breathalyser test, and the truck driver was detained over dangerous driving causing death.

Separately at about 7am, three drivers were injured in a crash in Sheung Wan. The incident involved a bus, a taxi and a car.

The First Bus vehicle, on route 113, was heading to Central on Connaught Road West when a car in the opposite lane, making a right turn, hit it at the junction with Chung King Road.

The bus driver, 58, lost control of his vehicle, which ran up a pavement and knocked down several bus stop signs, before smashing into the staircase of a footbridge at the Macau Ferry bus terminus.

The car also hit a taxi before it came to a stop.

The bus driver, the car driver, 60, and the cabbie, 64, were sent to Queen Mary Hospital for minor injuries. A 68-year-old bus passenger who was slightly injured was also sent to the hospital.

A spokesman from the bus firm said the driver joined the company in 1998, and was on his first shift on Sunday. The company said it suspected the car driver was not following traffic signals at the time of the crash.
