SERI ALAM: A factory worker drowned when his car plunged into a ravine near Sungai Tiram at 2.30am today.
Syamsuddin Ab Samad, 40, from Taman Bestari Indah, died when his Perodua Kenari turned turtle in a small stream after falling into a six-metre ravine.
Three other passengers in the car - his wife and their two children - survived.
Seri Alam police chief Superintendent Jokhiri Ab Aziz said the victim, who was driving the car, was trapped under water when the entire right side of the car was completely submerged.
Jokhiri said initial investigations revealed that the accident occurred when the family of four was on their way home around 1am.
"As they reached a corner near Jalan Bestari Indah 8/3, the driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle and swerved into a fence along the road before falling into the stream below," he said.
He said personnel from the Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue Department struggled to get the trapped driver out as the front part of the car was completely filled with silt and mud.
"Eventually, rescuers managed to pull the driver out of his seat. However, the victim died at the scene,” he said.
Jokhiri said the driver's wife and two children, aged 9 and 12, were injured and were immediately rushed to the Sultan Ismail Hospital.
