Man, 61, fatally struck by Long Beach fire truck, authorities say

A Long Beach Fire Department truck responding to an emergency call fatally struck a 61-year-old man lying in front of the station's doors early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The incident occurred at 12:30 a.m. outside Fire Station 8 in the 5300 block of 2nd Street in Belmont Shore, according to Jake Heflin, a spokesman for the Fire Department. Authorities said the man was lying in front of the roll-up door to the fire station when the engine exited.

Heflin said that firefighters rendered aid to the man but that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Los Angeles County medical examiner identified the man as Michael Ross of Long Beach. Coroner's officials said he was unhoused.

The Long Beach Police Department is investigating the incident.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the individual and his family," Heflin said, adding that a crisis response team was sent to assist the crew involved in the tragic incident.
