Man filmed in road rage incident against taxi driver charged
SINGAPORE — A 30-year-old man who was filmed smashing a taxi with his motorcycle helmet at Keat Hong Close last week was charged in court on Thursday (14 October).
Joel Tan Qing Wei was handed one charge of rashly endangering the personal safety of others by throwing a rear windscreen wiper at the rear windscreen of a CityCab taxi, located at the service road beside Block 804B Keat Hong Close, at about 6.05pm on 10 October, while there were passengers in the cab. The rear windscreen shattered as a result of the act, according to the charge sheet.
According to a Singapore Police Force press release, Tan allegedly confronted the taxi driver over a traffic dispute and had used his motorcycle helmet to hit the taxi, damaging the vehicle. The driver and the passengers on board the taxi, including a baby, were unhurt.
Police were alerted to Tan’s act of smashing the taxi at about 6.10pm. Officers established Tan's identity and arrested him on Tuesday.
The prosecution asked for a three-week adjournment for investigations to be completed against Tan, who was also being investigated by the Central Narcotics Bureau for drug offences.
Tan will return to court on 28 October.
If convicted of rash act endangering the safety or lives of others, Tan may be jailed up to six months, fined up to $2,500, or both.
