Man gets 3 years in jail for making crank calls to the police, something he’s been doing since 2000

Despite being jailed before for making nuisance calls to the police emergency hotline, a 61-year-old man continued to bother the cops with his incoherent ramblings.

Yesterday, Gurcharan Singh was sentenced to three years in jail after pleading guilty to five counts of making calls to an emergency telephone number with the intent of annoying the operators. The heavy sentence is a result of him reoffending while out on bail and breaching his remission order, Channel NewsAsia reported.

The serial crank caller has been at it since 2000, usually making the bothersome calls — that include bomb threats — after drinking alcohol.

On the evening of June 10, Singh used a public phone at an HDB void deck at Chai Chee Road to call 999 after drinking a few cans of beer earlier in the day. The call lasted two minutes, with Singh calling the phone operator “stupid” and even threatened to “put dynamite to the immigration house,” TODAY reported.

Following the call, he then went to down more beers and called the emergency hotline again using a public phone. This time, the call lasted nearly six minutes and involved Singh expressing unhappiness with the immigration authorities.

“You are scared to see me … you got balls to see me not,” he said to the operator, CNA reported.

The operators alerted their supervisor and the police managed to trace the crank caller’s location. Singh was arrested at the void deck of Block 804 Chai Chee Road that day.

He was released on bail — only to make another 15 calls to the police nine days later. From the same public phone in Chai Chee, and also after drinking beer.

In court, the prosecution asked for 45 months’ jail for Singh, stating that the police expended resources to track down the caller and that hehad been prank calling the police hotline since 2000. The court also heard that his “main issue is that of drinking”, with District Judge Eddy Tham noting that Singh underwent a programme with the National Addictions Management Service for about eight months in 2013. But then Singh was jailed for 20 months that year and got another stint in prison for two years in 2016. The man even went through a five-year corrective training sentence in 2008.

“Hopefully this will be the last time for you,” said the judge in sentencing Singh.
