KUALA LUMPUR: A 36-year-old man was fined RM1,000, in default two months’ jail, for slapping his former wife during an argument in a parking lot last month.

K. Ganesan, clad in a grey shirt, pleaded guilty when the charge was read before Mahyudin Mohamad Som at the magistrate’s court here yesterday.

He had been charged with causing hurt to P. Sundraswary near a parking lot at Wisma Standard Chartered at Technology Park Malaysia at 7.40am on Feb 6.

Under Section 323 of the Penal Code, Ganesan was liable to imprisonment of up to a year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Farah Adila Noordin asked the court for a heavy sentence to teach the accused a lesson.

However, Ganesan, who was unrepresented, pleaded for lenient punishment as he was the sole breadwinner for his family.

“I very much regret my actions and promise it will not happen again,” he said.

According to the facts of the case, Sundraswary had met her ex-husband at the scene to talk about personal matters. An argument then broke out and Ganesan slapped her face, causing her cheek to swell and forcing her to seek treatment at a hospital.
