They scoured the Bukit Merah area in the wee hours of the morning looking for a motorcycle from which they could steal parts to add to an e-scooter.

Chancing upon one at Bukit Merah Lane, 24-year-old Zulkarnahin Johari and his accomplice, 20-year-old Mohammad Irwan Atan, proceeded to remove parts of the vehicle using a wirecutter.

Zulkarnahin pleaded guilty to the crime – which took place on 14 April – before Judge Sarah Tan at the State Courts on Tuesday (22 August) and was sentenced to five months’ imprisonment. Irwan had been dealt with earlier by the justice system.

The court heard that Irwan told Zulkarnahin that he wanted to steal the motorcycle’s headlight and speedometer, while the latter said he wanted the side light of the same vehicle.

Despite taking these parts, along with a wire harness, the duo discarded all of them except for the headlight, which Irwan later installed on a friend’s e-bicycle. The totally value of the parts taken was $1,460.

Zulkarnahin, who was represented by lawyer Ranandhir Gupta, was also disqualified from obtaining or holding all classes of driving license for a period on 12 months upon his release from prison.

For his crime, Zulkarnahin could have been jailed up to seven years.
