Man jailed for throwing beer bottles at duck rice hawker
SINGAPORE — Unhappy with a duck rice hawker, a 48-year-old coffee shop patron threw two glass beer bottles at her, a court heard.
One of the bottles hit the back of the 41-year-old victim and shattered, but she was not injured.
At the State Courts on Monday (December 23), the perpetrator Ong Li Koon, 48, was jailed for four weeks.
He pleaded guilty to one charge of doing a rash act to endanger the personal safety of others.
On 21 August, Ong went to Serangoon Garden Market to buy duck rice for his son at about 1pm.
Although there was a queue in front of Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice, Ong made his way to the front of the queue to place a deposit of $50 for his order.
Hawker Tan Li Swan told Ong that she would take his order, but that she would serve those in the queue first before serving him.
Shortly after, Ong returned to the stall to ask why his duck rice still wasn’t ready. Noticing that those who were in the queue were no longer there, Ong felt frustrated and grumbled to Tan.
Tan and her husband then told Ong that if he was unhappy, he could choose not to patronise their stall, the court heard.
Enraged, Ong took at empty beer bottle and threw it forcefully at the shop at about 1.15pm. He then picked another beer bottle and did the same thing.
One of the bottles hit Tan but she was unscathed. Ong’s actions were captured on CCTV footage.
The maximum punishment Ong could have received is up to six months’ jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
