SINGAPORE — A man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend in the left buttock area while he was high on drugs was on Tuesday (3 September) jailed for one year.

Basnayake Keith Spencer pleaded guilty to one charge of causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.

The 31-year-old Singaporean was previously in a relationship with the victim, Danielle Joan Pereira, 29, from August 2015 to November 2016.

However, Basnayake’s parents did not approve of their relationship, the court heard, causing the couple to break up.

They remained in contact and were involved in a non-committal relationship.

In September last year, the victim booked an apartment for three days to celebrate her birthday.

On the second day of her stay there, on 13 September, Basnayake turned up uninvited at around 1am. She allowed him in out of goodwill, the court heard.

While he was there, he consumed methamphetamine.

On 14 September, at about 6.45am, while the victim was eating in the living room with her friend, she noticed Basnayake loitering in the kitchen.

Suddenly, he took a 34cm-long knife with a 20cm-long blade and stabbed her left gluteal area. The victim tried to stand up but fell down due to her stab wound.

Fearing for everyone’s safety, she shouted for her friends to leave the apartment and they complied.

Basnayake then sat on the sofa in the living room and spoke to the victim for about two to three minutes, saying she had “taken away” his parents from him. He then dialled for an ambulance, saying he had stabbed his friend and she was bleeding.

Policemen arrived soon after and took Basnayake aside while paramedics attended to the victim before taking her to hospital.

The victim needed seven stitches to close her stab wound, which was 4cm long and 8cm deep.

Basnayake was sent to the Drug Rehabilitation Centre on 21 September last year for taking drugs.

The maximum punishment for causing hurt by a dangerous weapon is up to seven years’ jail along with a fine and caning.
