A man who stole beer products and a Magnum ice cream was jailed for six weeks on Friday (13 October). Jasbi Mohamed Yusof, 49, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft in the State Courts. Another similar charge was taken into consideration during sentencing.

On 5 July 2017, at about 3.30pm, Jasbi was observed to be behaving suspiciously outside a 7-Eleven store in Bukit Batok East Avenue 5 by Daniel Saperima, who works as a loss prevention officer at the store.

Twenty minutes later, the store’s cashier told Daniel that the accused took one Magnum double chocolate ice cream worth $4.20 from the chiller placed outside the store and left without paying for it. Daniel confirmed the theft after viewing CCTV footage.

Daniel went to search for Jasbi and managed to locate him at a nearby bus stop. He then detained Jasbi and called the police. The ice cream was not recovered because Jasbi had consumed it.

On 6 September, at about 12.45pm, Jasbi was at an NTUC Fairprice supermarket at Bukit Batok East Avenue 3 when he committed the other offence. He was carrying a basket of beer products and going to an unmanned cashier counter to take a plastic bag. This was spotted by the store’s security officer Lee Chong Chiong, who then tailed Jasbi to the detergent section.

It was there when Jasbi transferred one bottle of Guinness Stout, two bottles of Carlsberg, four Tiger Beer cans and six Anchor beer cans – with a total value of $41.95 – from the basket into the plastic bag, before he walked out of the store without paying for them. Lee detained Jasbi at a nearby carpark and called the police.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Charleston Teo said that Jasbi has prior convictions dating back to March 2005, including for multiple theft and drug offences. In his mitigation, Jasbi told the court that he is “tired of going in and out of jail”, and asked for “one last chance”. He added, “I’m not getting young anymore, I’m turning 50. I want to start a family.”

When asked by District Judge May Mesenas if he had an alcohol addiction since it was not the first time that he had been caught stealing alcoholic drinks, Jasbi replied that he did not know what he was doing as he had consumed sleeping pills.

DJ Mesenas advised Jasbi, “You need help, otherwise you are just going to be a burden for someone else if you are going to start a family.”
