SINGAPORE — A 38-year-old man molested a Secondary 1 student while she was on her way home, a court heard.
Lawrence Goh Koon Yong also insulted the modesty of a 19-year-old victim by asking her if she wanted to have sex with him.
But the victim tricked him by agreeing to meet at her void deck the next day, where policemen arrested him.
At the State Courts on Wednesday (11 December), Goh pleaded guilty to three charges - molestation, insulting the modesty of a woman, and theft.
He is expected to be sentenced on 8 January.
Approached first victim at void deck
On 7 October, Goh went up to the Secondary 1 student who was walking back home from school at a void deck at about 11am.
“He asked the victim if she was in Secondary 1. The victim told the accused she was in Secondary 1 and walked away as she did not want to engage the accused,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor Genevieve Pang.
“The accused followed the victim and asked if she wanted to go to a dark corner to study. He also asked her if she had a boyfriend,” added the prosecutor.
To protect herself, the victim said she had a boyfriend. But it didn’t deter Goh. He told her that he wanted to be her boyfriend, went close to her and grabbed her waist.
Frightened, the victim pushed him away and ran home.
Approached second victim in lift
On 2 September, Goh insulted the modesty of the 19-year-old victim inside a lift at about 10pm.
Said DPP Pang, “He went close to the victim such that his upper arm touched her upper arm. He then asked the victim ‘do you want to do’ in Chinese. The accused uttered these words with the intention of asking the victim to have sex with him.”
Wanting to get away from Goh, the victim gave him her phone number and suggested that he arrange a meeting the next day.
At about 11.20pm, Goh called the victim and told her to meet him at the void deck of her block the next evening. She discussed the matter with her father and pretended to agree to the meeting. The father then called the police.
At about 9.35pm the next day, Goh called the victim to tell her that he was waiting at the void deck. She alerted the police and officers soon arrested him.
On 31 July, Goh also stole a pair of black New Balance shoes worth $160 outside a second floor HDB unit in Commonwealth Crescent. The shoes belonged to a 77-year-old woman. “He claimed that he stole the shoes to replace his spoilt shoes,” said DPP Pang. The shoes have not been recovered.
The maximum punishment for molesting a person under 14 is up to five years’ jail, along with a fine and caning.
For insulting the modesty of a woman, Goh faces a maximum punishment of up to one year in jail and a fine.
The maximum penalty for theft is up to three years’ jail and a fine.
