Man nabbed for breaking into Changi Road shophouse, stealing $4,000

A 20-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday (19 September) afternoon for allegedly breaking into a shophouse along Changi Road and stealing $4,000 from the unit earlier that same day.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday (19 September) afternoon for allegedly breaking into a shophouse along Changi Road and stealing $4,000 from the unit earlier that same day.

In a statement on Thursday, the police said it received a report about the incident at around 4.50am on Wednesday.

Officers from Bedok Police Division arrested the suspect along Jalan Sultan at 4.30pm later that day.

He will be charged on Friday with housebreaking and theft by night under Section 457 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The penalty for the offence is a jail term of between two and 14 years, with a fine.

In its statement, the police advised members of the public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Ensure all doors and windows are secured with good quality grilles and close-shackled padlocks;

  • Secure all doors and window grills before retiring to bed, or when leaving your
    shop/home unattended;

  • Install a burglar alarm, motion sensor light and/or close circuit surveillance
    camera to cover the access points into your premises;

  • Keep large sums of cash in the banks, with minimal sum of money left behind
    in commercial premises at night.
