In the early hours of the morning of 18 October, 2015, Lim Huat Chye, 51, was giving Goh Joe Seng, 56, a lift home. The two men had been at a karaoke and drinking session at a pub in Taman Jurong.

During the journey, Lim lost control of his lorry and crashed into a tree. In the process, Goh sustained serious injuries and died an hour after the accident.

Some 18 months after the fatal accident, Lim pleaded guilty to a single charge of causing death by a negligent act on Wednesday (26 April) before District Judge Lorraine Ho.

Reading from the statement of facts, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Kelly Ho said that Lim was driving along Corporation Road at about 2.07 am. As the lorry was approaching a lamp post along the road, Lim failed to take proper care as he negotiated his vehicle through a left lane.

This resulted in the lorry moving across the right lane and mounting the centre road kerb before hitting into a tree. Goh was conveyed to Ng Teng Fong Hospital after the accident, but succumbed to his injuries at about 3.26 am.

A forensic report stated the cause of death as head injuries with hypertensive heart disease.

Lim’s lawyer Hany Soh, will be submitting her mitigation for her client. He is expected to be sentenced on 8 May.

Lim is facing a maximum jail term of two years and/or a fine.
