When Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers conducted a bust at a house in Yishun in 2015, drugs were not the only illegal substances that they uncovered.

Explosives and an airsoft pistol were also found at the house of Kang Chun How, 22, who pleaded guilty to five charges on Monday (29 January) for possession and consumption of drugs, possession of explosives, ammunition and an airsoft pistol. Three other similar charges were taken into consideration.

The court heard that Kang had learned how to make the explosives by searching on the internet. He admitted to possessing the explosives since 2012.

He also had the airsoft pistol since 2012 even though he knew it was illegal to possess it without a license.

In November 2014, Kang also conducted online searches related to airsoft pistol parts, as well as terms such as “how to make a sparkler rockets (sic)” and “improvised weapon”.

During the CNB raid at Kang’s house at Yishun Ave 11 on 16 September 2015, Kang lied to the officers that he had nothing to surrender. The officers, however, found items including cannabis, an airsoft pistol, BB pellets, a bottle marked ‘R-Candy’ and a bottle marked ‘Potassium Nitrate’.

A laboratory test found that ‘R-Candy’ contained potassium nitrate and sucrose, a substance that was “very likely” able to cause an “explosion or a pyrotechnic effect”, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Kumaresan Gohulabalan.

Police also seized 22 cartridges, including seven suspected explosives, at Kang’s house.

Amardeep Singh, Kang’s lawyer, said the defence was seeking to clarify a psychiatric report that had been submitted in court.

Kang will be back in court on 21 February.
