IPOH, Aug 20 — The police arrested a 35-year-old man for threatening to kill Perak state executive councillor Howard Lee via a WhatsApp group message.

State police chief Datuk Razarudin Husain said that the man was arrested yesterday and the Magistrate’s Court in Ipoh has granted a four-day remand until August 23.

“We arrested the man following the report made by Lee’s personal secretary over the death threat on Sunday. We also a seized a mobile phone in the process.

“The investigation is conducted under Section 507 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for causing death threat via a group messenger application,” he said in a statement.

He said that the police are carrying out the investigation in a transparent and fair manner.

Razarudin also advises WhatsApp group administrators to comply with the guidelines issued regarding what they should and should not do, so that the group members do not commit a criminal offence, which can endanger the country’s safety and harmony.

Yesterday, Lee, who is the exco in charge of the state Youth, Sports and Human Development Committee, was called by the police to give statement over the death threat following the report lodged by his office.
