When he failed to convince a domestic helper to be in a relationship with him, he posted her naked photos online as he was angered by her rejection.

On Monday (14 January), Islam Rokibul, a 31-year-old Bangladeshi who works in the marine industry, was jailed for four months in the State Courts. He pleaded guilty to one count of criminal intimidation to cause injury to the woman’s reputation and one count of transmitting obscene material.

The 28-year-old victim, who is a Filipina, cannot be named to protect her identity.

Sometime before September last year, Islam became acquainted with the woman through Facebook. On one occasion, the pair had a video call while the woman was showering. Unbeknownst to the woman, Islam took several screenshots of the woman showering.

In September, the woman stopped talking to Islam. On 9 September, Islam called the woman, threatening to post her obscene photos online if she did not commit to a relationship with him. He communicated the threat to her by sending numerous text messages and making phone calls to her.

Islam followed through his threat by uploading seven indecent images of the victim to a social media platform.

“(Islam) did so to shame the victim as he was angered by the victim’s rejection of his advances,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor Jaime Pang.

The woman made a police report on 4 October last year. When he was arrested on the same day, Islam was found with 10 obscene images of naked women in his mobile phone.

The woman’s obscene photos have since been removed from the social media platform but she still receives images of her from unknown persons requesting for sex.

For criminal intimidation, the man could have been fined and/or jailed up to two years.

For transmitting obscene material, he could have been jailed up to three months and/or fined.
