SINGAPORE — A 28-year-old man almost got away with filming his former flatmates showering, a court heard.

But Wong Wen Kent’s wife found four such clips in a folder on his computer labelled “tou pai”, or “secretly recorded”, in Mandarin.

One of the victims made a police report three years later, after he confessed his crime to her.

At the State Courts on Wednesday (4 December), Wong, a Malaysian, was jailed for 12 weeks.

He pleaded guilty to one charge of insulting the modesty of a woman.

Three other similar counts were considered in sentencing.

Placed spy cam on window ledge

Investigations revealed that Wong bought a spy camera disguised as a pen in January 2016.

He placed it on a window ledge in the common bathroom of an apartment in Thomson Road.

“He intentionally positioned the camera to surreptitiously record videos of his flatmates showering,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor Pang Jaime. “He would leave the camera in recording mode after he finished using the shower, and collect the camera several hours after.”

Wong would then save the footage of his female flatmates showering.

On 18 November 2017, while in Ipoh, Malaysia, Wong’s wife used his computer and found his secret folder.

The four video clips inside the folder showed the women fully nude and showering. She confronted him and Wong admitted to taking videos of his former flatmates showering the previous year.

On 16 February this year, one of the victims made a police report after Wong confessed to her. It is not known if Wong’s wife forced him to confess to the crime.

The maximum punishment for insulting the modesty of a woman is up to one year in jail and a fine.
