Several trusted sources are reporting that Man Utd defender Luke Shaw is on the verge of signing a new contract with the club.

Shaw’s current contract is due to expire in 2024 after Man Utd activated their option to extend it for one more season in December. But the left-back is important enough for the club to want to keep him for even longer.

Therefore, there have been negotiations about an updated deal for the 29-cap England international. TEAMtalk exclusively revealed in February that talks were underway over the new deal to deter the likes of Chelsea.

And according to several breaking reports on Friday, Shaw is all set to sign up.

First to reveal the news was the Daily Telegraph, which made it clear that Man Utd now expect Shaw to commit his long-term future to the club.

It was followed up by new information from The Athletic, confirming that Shaw’s new deal will last for four years and that he has already agreed it.

Likewise, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Shaw has “accepted all conditions” of Man Utd’s renewal offer.

Closer to the club geographically, the Manchester Evening News has also verified the update and is carrying its own version of the story, as is Sky Sports News.

According to The Athletic, Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag appreciates Shaw’s maturity and versatility. The 27-year-old has even covered at centre-back on a few occasions this season.

Overall, since Ten Hag took charge, Shaw has earned 35 Man Utd appearances, providing six assists and one goal.

His complete record for the club since his 2014 arrival from Southampton currently reads 248 appearances, four goals and 28 assists.

Luke Shaw cements importance to Man Utd

There have been times when his future as a Man Utd player has looked to be in doubt. However, Shaw has bounced back in recent years to establish his importance again.

After seeing off competition from Alex Telles prior to Ten Hag’s arrival, Shaw has since remained the first choice in his position ahead of summer recruit, Tyrell Malacia.

Therefore, it makes sense for Man Utd to tie him down for the long term. By signing his new deal, Shaw will end up surpassing a decade of service to the club.

Next on the agenda for Man Utd will be to explore the contracts of David de Gea (due to expire in the summer) and Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot (whose terms will run out in 2024).

There are a handful of other players out of contract at the end of next season, too. Ten Hag will be hoping some of those players will follow Shaw in pledging their future to the club, although a couple of them could be let go of.

It is not yet clear when the full-back’s extension will be officially announced. But with so many respected outlets reporting the news, there seems to be no doubt about what the outcome will be.

The Athletic makes the point that this will be the first major piece of business by Man Utd while the Glazers are listening to offers for the club. It proves their stance of it being business as usual throughout the takeover process.

Like with all his teammates, Shaw’s focus will be on his duties on the pitch. Man Utd will return from the international break on Sunday with a crucial Premier League match away to Newcastle United.
