A Man Utd treble winner fears his former side are repeating past mistakes when speaking about the player Erik ten Hag has installed as his No 1 striker target.

Man Utd’s primary focus this summer is signing a world class centre-forward. A central midfielder will then come into focus, according to Fabrizio Romano, though the striker deal remains top priority.

United have a chequered record with regards to striker signings over the last decade or so.

Robin van Persie can only be categorised as a success after firing United to the league title in 2012/13. However, the great Dutchman was at the tail end of his career when plucked from Arsenal and never again hit the heights he reached in his first season at Old Trafford.

High profile moves for the likes of Radamel Falcao, Alexis Sanchez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo followed in subsequent years. Ibrahimovic and Ronaldo had their moments, though did more harm than good for the long-term success of the club.

As such, it may surprise some to see the Manchester Evening News declare Tottenham talisman Harry Kane to be Ten Hag’s first-choice when it comes to striker signings this summer. Kane will turn 30 on July 28.

Younger and no less impactful strikers such as Victor Osimhen of Napoli have been heavily linked. But per the MEN, Kane is the player Ten Hag favours most.

Now, former United treble winner, Andy Cole, has voiced his concerns United are falling into the same old trap.

Signing Kane means another striker required two years later?

“Manchester United can’t go with a short-term solution again,” said Cole (via the Mirror).

“They can’t go and spend £80m or £100m on Harry Kane. In two years’ time they’ll turn round and say to themselves, ‘he’s 32, we need to get ourselves another striker’.

“They can’t afford to find themselves in that position again.”

The flipside to that argument is many believe Kane can continue to operate at a high level deep into his 30s.

Kane is not a player who has ever relied on blistering pace and what quickness he does have won’t be missed all that greatly when it goes.

However, injuries as players get older are an inevitability and Cole’s concerns may well be valid.
