SINGAPORE — A 35-year-old man will be charged in court on Thursday (11 June) for allegedly inciting violence on the Telegram app.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a press release on Wednesday that it had received a report on 30 December last year stating that the man had allegedly posted a comment in a Telegram group chat to rally other personal mobility device users to gather at Punggol Park and hurt anyone they see.

His identity was established and he was arrested the next day.

He will be charged with the offence of making an electronic record containing an incitement to violence, which carries a jail term of up to five years, or a fine, or both.

“Members of the public are advised to refrain from making any form of communication that incites violence. The police will not condone acts that threatens the safety and security of Singapore and will continue to take tough enforcement actions against those who break the law,” said the SPF.

With effect from 5 November last year, e-scooters were banned from being used along pedestrian footpaths following an increase in accidents involving the devices and pedestrians.
