SINGAPORE — A 20-year-old man who sneaked into a hotel where his female friend was serving her Stay-Home Notice (SHN) was on Wednesday (8 September) sentenced to 15 months' probation.

As part of his sentence, Kaiser Sow will also have to perform 80 hours of community service. His parents were bonded in the sum of $5,000 to ensure his good behaviour.

Sow had earlier pleaded guilty to abetting Teo Yue Qi, 20, to breach her SHN by visiting her hotel room.

Another charge of criminal trespass was considered in sentencing.

About the case

Sow and Teo knew each other from school.

On 22 November last year, Teo returned to Singapore and was placed on SHN at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. She was required to remain alone in her room during the SHN, which would last until 6 December.

A few days later, on her birthday on 28 November, Sow entered the hotel to see if he could surprise her with a visit. He had been in touch with her and knew her room number. He also knew that he was not supposed to come into close contact with her.

Unable to access the 17th floor, where her room was, Sow went up to the 30th floor of the hotel before taking a service elevator to the 17th floor. He then rang Teo's doorbell and surprised her. She didn't stop him from entering her room at about 3pm.

Sow left the room at about 4pm and took the stairs down to the ground floor where a staff saw him. When the staff tried to stop him, Sow fled and got into a cab.

For his offence, Sow could have been jailed for up to six months and also fined up to $10,000.
