A man and a woman were reportedly arrested at a Japanese barbecue restaurant in Hong Kong after a brawl over who should foot the bill.

Reports said that the pair, who were recent acquaintances, had chalked up a bill of HK$2,200 (about S$395) after dining at the restaurant, located at Hong Kong’s King Wah Centre, on Sunday evening (23 April).

The woman had allegedly refused after the man suggesting going Dutch, popularly known in the city as going “AA”. The spat quickly escalated into a physical altercation that resulted in the man sustaining nose injuries and the woman sustaining limb injuries.

The incident sparked discussions online about the practice of splitting bills on dates, with one suggesting that the man should have paid the bill in full. However, it seems that the restaurant’s management had a different account of what happened.

The restaurant said in an online post that the two customers had ordered three bottles of sake, three glasses of beer and soft drinks which cost close to HD$1,200 (about S$215) alone, in addition to their food. The restaurant said that the man had paid the bill in cash. He then tore up a HK$500 (S$90) note handed to him by the woman. The pair started arguing before coming to blows.

The pair was arrested after the woman called the police. The man was arrested for committing assault occasioning actual bodily harm while the woman was arrested for committing common assault.
