Manchester City have signed US international and World Cup winner Sam Mewis, who has compared joining the Women’s Super League club to “winning the lottery.”

The 27-year-old, who was a key player in the United States’ World Cup campaign last year, joins from North Carolina Courage in America’s National Women’s Soccer League.

"I feel so lucky to have the opportunity," Mewis told BBC Sport. "A couple of months ago my agent came to me with it and my eyes just kind of opened wide because obviously Manchester City is such a great club and is so well known.

"We [North Carolina Courage] played them last year in the ICC [International Champions Cup] tournament and I just remember thinking how good they were and how every player was so comfortable on the ball.

"I thought it would be cool to play overseas one day and for a club like Manchester City. I feel really lucky and really fortunate to have this opportunity."

The midfielder, who has 67 caps and 18 goals for her country and was an NWSL Championship winner with Western New York Flash in 2017, is City's second summer signing after England striker Chloe Kelly joined from Everton last month.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport in June, England stars Lucy Bronze and Alex Greenwood are also set to link up with Gareth Taylor’s side from French and European champions Lyon ahead of the new WSL season, which is scheduled to begin on September 5.

In signing for City, who lost out on a successive WSL title in May to Chelsea after the league was decided on a points-per-game basis, Mewis follows in the footsteps of fellow US international Carli Lloyd, who joined the club on a short-term deal in 2017.

"I feel like the WSL is such a great place to try to play," added Mewis. "Carli Lloyd has just raved about her experiences here - the facilities, the girls and the team. So obviously it's a huge opportunity for me and that makes it so exciting.

"As players go on in their career and look to move abroad, this is definitely a great option.”
