Mango Congress Set In Zambales

It is all systems go for the 15th National Mango Congress which will be held on March 20-22 at the RMTU Gym in Iba, Zambales, it was announced by Virginia de la Fuente, president of the Philippine Mango Industry Foundation, Inc. (PMIFI) which undertakes the event every year.

Host and co-organizer of this year's congress is the Samahang Magmamanga ng Zambales, Inc. headed by Evelyn A. Grace. It is also being given full support by the provincial government and other agencies like the DA-Region 3, Regional Agriculture and Fishery Council 3, Department of Science and Technology 3, Department of Tourism 3, and the DTI provincial office.

The event also coincides with the annual Mango Festival in Zambales where the harvests of the mango growers in the province are showcased and offered for sale to the public. Zambales mangoes are noted for their sweetness.

Slated to keynote the opening is Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala who will be accompanied by ranking officials of the department. Among them is Jennifer Remoquillo, head of the High-Value Crops Development Program of the DA. Before the speech of Sec. Alcala, Remoquillo will present the 2013 Priority Interventions For Mango.

A series of seminars on timely topics are slated. Dr. Celia dlR Medina of UP Los Baños will discuss Insect Resistance Management that include improving pesticide use, improving pesticide choice, and brief updates on the control of Cecid Fly and Capsid Bug.

On the second day, March 21, Dr. Medina will also talk on the Biological Control of Leafhoppers. This will be followed by the Biological Control of Anthracnose and Diplodia by Engr. Grecilda Zaballero of Ahcil Laboratories, inventor of Antica, the first organic fungicide with bactericidal properties approved by the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority.

DA Assistant Secretary Salvador Salacup will talk about the Status of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and National Organic Act for Mango.

Danilo Dannung of the Bureau of Plant Industry, on the other hand, will discuss Plant Nursery/Scion Grove Certification and Updates on BPI Researches on Mango.

Another speaker will be Dr. Edralina P. Serrano of Los Baños who will talk on Quantifying Postharvest Losses in the Mango Value Chain. A few other speakers are also scheduled to talk on other timely topics.
