Manila jail inmates call for warden's ouster over 'abuse'

Angry Manila City Jail inmates belonging to the “Sputnik Gang” held a noise barrage Thursday to call for the ouster of an allegedly abusive jail warden.

In Jun Veneracion's report on "24 Oras," one of the inmates' relative who refused to be identified said the warden, identified as Superintendent Lindon Torres, were feeding the prisoners spoiled or tasteless food.

She also said jail guards were physically abusing the inmates.

In another report by Jiggy Manicad, Torres was also accused of barring the entry of construction materials that would be used for the gang's brigade unit.

Torres denied the accusation, saying the construction materials were barred because those were being used to sneak in illegal drugs to the facility.

"Hindi po totoo 'yan. 'Yung mga construction materials, 'yan ang front nila sa pagpasok ng mga illegal contrabands dito sa loob ng jail, mga shabu... Kaya lalo naming hinigpitan ang pagpasok ng construction materials. Trabaho lang talaga ang pinapairal namin rito. " Torres said in the report.

The warden also denied feeding the inmates spoiled food.
