Mapping COVID-19: 8 cases from SAFRA Jurong; French expat back from Europe

Singapore reported five new cases on Thursday night involving people linked to a private dinner function in Jurong and a French man whose arrival led to his plane being grounded.

The 42-year-old French expat tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday after arriving on a Turkish Airlines flight from Turkey, the Health Ministry said. He had been to France, Portugal and the United Kingdom before returning to the city-state. In response, the aircraft was grounded at Changi Airport.

The other four cases announced Thursday involved people linked to a dinner held at SAFRA Jurong, a recreation center for members of the national service, at 333 Boon Lay Way. Four previously announced cases were also linked to the same event, the ministry revealed. They included a student at Raffles Institution and a preschool cook.

The eight known infections there as of Friday afternoon make for Singapore’s seventh outbreak cluster.

Singapore has reported 117 cases so far, of which 81 have been discharged from hospitals. Seven remain in critical condition.
