TUMPAT: Marine police seized 50 boxes of smuggled cigarettes during an operation at Kampung Tualang near Simpangan here, early today.
However, no one was arrested in the operation as the lorry driver had abandoned the vehicle and the goods in order to escape, said Pengkalan Kubor marine police commanding officer Assistant Superintendent Ahmad Amri Abd Rahaman.
He said the smuggled cigarettes and the lorry seized were worth more than RM400,000.
He added that the marine officers had spotted the lorry as it was passing Kampung Tualang at about 4.50am.
“The lorry driver immediately abandoned the vehicle upon seeing the marine officers approaching. After checking the lorry, the officers found 55 boxes containing the cigarettes,” he told a press conference here today.
