"The Martian" lands at number one

Matt Damon-starrer, "The Martian", is No.1 in the U.S, M'sia and S'pore.

10 Oct – Newly-released "The Martian" has finally broken the Mars curse! Regardless whether the curse even existed in the first place (though a lot of movie related to Mars did tank), the movie did undeniably make a refreshing debut at the weekend box office for 1 to 4 October.

The Ridley Scott adaptation of Andy Weir's same name 2011 novel opened strong last weekend, placing first in the U.S. as well as Malaysia and Singapore.

The movie about Mark Watney (Matt Damon), an astronaut stranded in space, took in USD54.3 million in the U.S., based on Box Office Mojo stats. This places it just behind 2011's "Gravity", which currently holds the highest October opening weekend record with USD55.7 million. Worldwide, the adventure sci-fi has grossed USD98.8 million.

Second place is populated by the ghosts and ghouls – and humans – of "Hotel Transylvania 2". The animated movie moved down a spot with its weekend gross of USD33.1 million. By its second weekend, it has managed to gross USD150.5 million worldwide.

"Sicario" made an impressive leap from tenth place right up to third place, having collected USD12.1 million last weekend. The Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro-starrer is slowly catching up to its USD30 million production cost as it has so far grossed USD24.7 million worldwide.

"Hotel Transylvania 2" holding on tight to the top three.

"The Martian" also safely landed at number one at the Malaysia weekend box office, while another new release, Tamil movie "Puli", opened at number two despite initial delays. "Polis Evo", currently the highest grossing Malaysian film for 2015 which has surpassed RM8 million, slipped one spot down to number three.

Singapore also has new release "The Martian" topping the chart, with "Everest" remaining stone cold at its second place position. "Hotel Transylvania 2" lost its grip, falling down two spots to third place.

Other new releases in Malaysia last weekend are "Saving Mr. Wu", "Dark Awakening", "The Diabolical", "Singh Is Bling", "Pontianak Menangis", "Mr. Holmes" and "Attack On Titan Part 2: Wings Of Freedom".

Singapore also saw the opening of these movies last weekend: "Singh is Bling", "Talvar", "The Green Inferno", "Puli", "Pawn Sacrifice", "Lost in Hong Kong" and "Saving Mr. Wu".
