Marvel’s WandaVision trailer: 7 easter eggs and talking points you may have missed

Fans have finally got their first look at Marvel’s forthcoming series WandaVision ahead of its arrival on Disney+ later this year.

The trailer, which debuted last night (20 September), is the first new Marvel content to be released in the last six months.

Following on from the events of Avengers: Endgame, the trailer sees Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) living an idyllic domestic life after tying the knot.

Their suburban bliss is interrupted by an unsettling dinner party with their neighbours, which hints that everything is not as picture-perfect as it seems.

1) Sitcom references

With “Twilight Time” by The Platters playing in the background, viewers are introduced to newlyweds Wanda Maximoff and Vision in a black and white 1950s sitcom setting. With the pair having to conceal their superhuman powers, the references to sitcoms like Bewitched and I Dream of Genie are obvious.

2) Is Vision dead?

The pair are living a blissful domestic life, which is a surprise given that fans will remember Vision being killed in Avengers: Infinity War. Later in the trailer though, it’s revealed that – despite appearances – Vision appears to still be dead.

3) House of M

In one scene, Wanda uses her powers to serve wine. The bottle’s label “Maison Du Mepris” translates to “House of Contempt”. Eagle-eyed fans have spotted that if left only partially translated, “House of M” is a subtle reference to the Marvel storyline in which Wanda has lost control of her powers and mutants rule over humans, among other inversions of “normal” life.

4) Who is Debra Jo Rupp playing?

The new trailer sees Rupp (That 70s Show) as a neighbour visiting for dinner at the couple’s house. The dinner party goes awry when she probes into Wanda and Vision’s backgrounds with neither having an adequate answer to give. Confusion ensues, and here is where their life of suburban bliss begins to falter.

5) Alternate Reality

Wanda wonders out loud: “Is this really happening?”. Images begin to flash and the 1950s sitcom setting fades away. Fans are speculating whether Wanda has used her powers to create an alternate reality in which Vision is still alive and whether or not she is even aware of it herself.

6) Who is Kathryn Hahn playing?

The actor makes a couple of appearances in the trailer, but most notably she appears sitting in a car on Halloween dressed as the Wicked Witch of the West from Wizard of Oz. Vision taps her head, after which she reveals that Vision is still dead before manically laughing.

7) Monica Rambeau

A body is seen flying through the sky, which then lands at the feet of government agents. A close-up reveals that it is Monica Rambeau from Captain Marvel, all grown up and played by actor Teyonah Parris. Fans think this means that WandaVision will have ties to the forthcoming Captain Marvel 2 movie.
