MBJB goes after assessment rate defaulters

JOHOR BARU: Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) has launched a three-day operation to seize the assets of assessment rate defaulters.

In the first day of operation, MBJB enforcement officers, accompanied by auxiliary policemen, conducted checks on five commercial premises in Bandar Baru Uda.

The enforcement team had initially wanted to seize the premises, but the action was deferred after the owners agreed to pay a portion of the arrears immediately.

Mayor Amran A. Rahman the operation targeted 15 to 20 commercial and industrial premises which had defaulted on assessment rate payments.

“The operation is conducted according to Section 148 of the Local Government Act 1976 and the seizure of premises is carried out on premises with defaulted payments of more than two years.

“The amount defaulted by the premises targeted in this operation totalled RM200,000,” said Amran, adding that MBJB would continue to conduct similar operations, from time to time.

“Hopefully, through these operations, the people of Johor Baru will realise their responsibility and the importance of making the assessment payments within the allotted period,” said Amran. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
