KUALA LUMPUR: After its dismal outing in the historic 14th general election (GE14), battered MCA will be tested again in the Balakong by-election.

The Barisan Nasional (BN) component party is expected to field Serdang party committee member Tan Che Teong in the state constituency’s nomination day at the Hulu Langat district office today.

Tan – whose candidacy was announced at Wisma MCA on Aug 14 – is a native Balakong businessman who is expected to go up against Pakatan Harapan contender Wong Siew Ki, who is Serdang DAP’s Wanita chief.

Balakong, once one of MCA’s strongholds, was held by Datuk Hoh Hee Lee from 1995 to 2008.

In 2008, MCA fielded Dr Lai Kwong Choy in the state constituency, as Hoh moved to contest the Serdang parliamentary seat. Both lost to DAP.

In 2013, MCA fielded Dr Lai again, but lost to DAP’s Eddie Ng Tien Chee.

When Ng was killed in a traffic accident on July 20, the Balakong state constituency fell vacant.

In the May 9 polls, Ng secured a 35,538 vote majority, beating BN candidate Lim Chin Wah of MCA, and Pas contender Mohamad Ibrahim Ghazali. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
