Megan Thee Stallion shooting: Tory Lanez charged with assaulting rapper with gun
Tory Lanez has been charged with shooting Megan Thee Stallion, a month after the rapper accused Lanez of firing a gun at her.
On Thursday (8 October), Los Angeles prosecutors confirmed they had given Lanez two felony charges: assault with a semiautomatic firearm and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle.
Lanez, a Canadian rapper, is accused of shooting at Megan Thee Stallion’s feet, after she exited a car during a fight in the Hollywood Hills on 12 July.
Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, is identified in the felony complaint only as “Megan P”. She had declined to name Lanez as the person who shot her for more than a month, despite reports of the incident on social media.
In August, Megan alleged that Lanez was responsible for her injuries. “Yes ... Tory shot me,” she said in an Instagram video, before urging Lanez to “stop lying” about the incident.
In the early hours of 24 September, Lanez broke his own silence on social media by hinting that he would finally address the allegations that night. However, it later turned out to be a promotional announcement about the surprise release of his fifth album.
The record sparked a backlash on social media, with many claiming that Lanez was “exploiting” Megan’s shooting in order to promote his music.
On the album, Lanez accused Megan Thee Stallion’s “people” of trying to “frame” him, rapping: “Gotta see a couple questions / How the f*** you get shot in your foot, don’t hit no bones or tendons?”
Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, is due to be arraigned on 13 October in Los Angeles. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of roughly 23 years.
