MELAKA: Eleven people were arrested here yesterday during an operation to crack down on illegal racing and mat rempits.

Two motorcyclists, aged 19 and 20, were among those detained.

Nine of those nabbed, however, were motorists with outstanding traffic arrest warrants. They were brought to the magistrate’s court here for sentencing today.

“Eight of them were fined between RM300 and RM2,000, while the ninth was ordered to report to the nearest police station for one month," said Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Afzanizar Ahmad.

The six-hour operation along Jalan Kubu began at 6pm and involved 33 policemen.

"We inspected 350 vehicles and issued 117 summonses, besides seizing three motorcycles for illegal modifications," Afzanizar said.

He added that 21 of the 117 summonses issued were for driving without a valid driving license.

Afzanizar said the offenders will be charged in court soon.
